Inflatables ship with an outdoor-rated cord and plug, but the rest of the power chain — extension cords, weatherproof connection boxes, timers — is something owners buy separately. Here's what's worth having.
Start at the outlet
- Use a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Exterior outlets are normally GFCI already; a tripped GFCI is also the most common reason a display goes dark, so check it before assuming a blower failed (full checklist).
- No outdoor outlet? The usual answers are an outdoor-rated cord run from a garage outlet, or having an exterior GFCI outlet added. Running a cord out through a window or door gap is common but leaves the seal and the cord vulnerable — treat it as temporary.
- Don't daisy-chain power strips. Add up what you're plugging in and keep it on the circuit's terms.
The connection box problem nobody warns you about
Weatherproof outdoor connection boxes — the plastic clamshells you put a plug junction inside — are genuinely useful and cheap. But a common frustration is that inflatable plugs are often large, square, right-angle blocks, and only one may fit in a box, or none will close properly.
Two practical workarounds: buy the larger "in-use" style box sized for bulky plugs, or connect at a point in the run where you're joining two ordinary cord ends and put that junction in the box instead. Either way, get connections up off the ground — a brick or stake keeps the junction out of a puddle.
